Discipline and concentration are a matter of being interested.

“Discipline and concentration are a matter of being interested.”  Tom Kite

Have you ever sat through a boring movie?  (When it’s your better half’s birthday and they chose the movie it doesn’t count.)  When you are not “into” something, when it doesn’t hold you in awe, it’s difficult to concentrate on it.

The pre-requisite of focus and concentration is interest.  Interest in your performance, interest in training methods, interest in the inner workings of your equipment.  This is why new equipment is such a good motivator.  You suddenly become interested again in your sport – the same way you increase your desire to train and compete when you enter for a new event.

At the end of the day, the biggest difference between amateur and elite athletes is not just ability, rather its discipline and consistency in preparation.
